America is the world leader in Biotechnology. The Biotechnology industry spurs economic growth and transforms the innovative ideas of today into the realities of tomorrow. The Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana recognizes the importance of developing a diversified, knowledge-based economy in Northwest Louisiana. The Foundation focuses on supporting technology-based initiatives which build an infrastructure conducive to maintaining and attracting new industry to the area or that may lead to marketable discoveries. The Biomedical Research Foundation is an advocate for educational endeavors which promote educating a workforce skilled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Therefore, the Biomedical Research Foundation, along with LSU Health Shreveport and other industry leaders, have collaborated with Southwood High School to develop a Biotechnology Magnet Program.
The Biotechnology Magnet Program is a rigorous STEM program unique to Southwood High School. The Biotechnology Magnet Program addresses Core Bioscience Skill Standards which address key activities to examine a student’s ability to perform required areas of expertise necessary for success in the workforce. Students entering the program as a freshman remain part of a cohort which culminates into an internship at LSUHSC, the BioStart Program, as a research assistant or the opportunity to participate within other technology-related sectors of the community – all of which is on a competitive basis.
The Biotechnology Magnet Program has expanded with a growing student enrollment and a diversification of student interest. Areas within the programs focus include, but are not limited to:

Eligibility for the Biotechnology Magnet Program:

An overall 2.75 grade point average for the eighth grade year (revised)
-
A 7th grade PARCC scaled score of 730 for both Math and ELA (revised)

Attendance rate at 90% or above

Good attendance and discipline record.

Regional Science Fair Results:
Noel Jacquet won first and Nazaria Parrott won second in health and medicine. Chelsea Flowers won second and Chris Johnson won third in microbiology. Kearra Odums won third in biomedical engineering.
Southwood won third place overall in the Regional Science Fair.
Noel was nominated for Regeneron Science Talent Search. Kearra won the Society for Science and Public Award for Community Innovation plus $500 cash award. Chris Lang won a gift card to Regal Theater.
Noel Jacquet, Nazaria Parrott and Chelsea Flowers qualified for the state science fair in Baton Rouge! They will compete on Wednesday, March 22nd.
